01.13.06 - Jacob Tyler Creative Group Uses Design to Grow Specialty Retail Food Market

SAN DIEGO, CA- The Outer Banks of North Carolina is not typically the hot-spot for cutting-edge creative design, but a sea change is in the making when Coastal Provisions specialty retail food market opens its doors in April 2006. The Southern Shores, North Carolina-based Coastal Provisions' entire identity package and Web site was the creative genius of Les Kollegian, lead designer of Jacob Tyler Creative Group in San Diego, CA. The only store of its kind in the Outer Banks, Coastal Provisions will carry everything from artisan cheeses to hormone and antibiotic-free chicken. The Food Lion it isn't.

"I created a clean look for them that visually conveyed the specialty food idea, but I also designed it thinking this is the type of signage that I would want to see if I were a carefree vacationer, looking for a higher-end place to shop," said Kollegian. Adds Chef Proprietor Scott Foster, "Our goal is to have a dozen specialty markets in the next 3 years, and Jacob Tyler Creative Group gave us an identity and creative plan that will still be looking fresh 10 stores from now."

Chef Foster and his partner, Chef Proprietor Dan Lewis, included Kollegian into their early stage planning meetings as the concept for their market evolved. "I wanted to give Coastal Provisions' shoppers a relaxing retail experience, where even the signage inside the stores was easy on the eyes," explains Kollegian. "We knew that being involved in the development phase would be a creative's dream, and Les Kollegian understood our thinking that good design should be integrated throughout our business," adds Chef Lewis.
