The good Ol’ Asteroid Gag… oldest one in the book

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

by Jonathan Marshall

A determined man sets up an elaborate ruse in a bar to get a woman that he would not normally be able to get if it weren’t for this unforeseen, end-of-the-world circumstance they conveniently find themselves in.

French Advertising and Web Design Agency CLM BBDO Paris recently created this spot for Pepsi. I guess this guy took it literally when girls turned him down in the past by saying, “maybe if you were the last man on earth…”

More What? More Classic Print Ads of course

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

by Jonathan Marshall

It all really started in the 1960s – the Golden Age of Advertising. At a time when the consumerist euphoria of the fifties was still going strong and the race to the moon was in daily conversations. The mood of advertising in the sixties was cheerful, optimistic, and at times – revolutionary.

The decade’s ads hyped perceived progress (such as Tang-”just add water”) while striving to reinforce good ole’ American values. Stars like Sean Connery, Woody Allen, and Sammy Davis Jr. endorsed everything from sunglasses and Bourbon to handmade suits in an attempt by the Mad Men on Madison Avenue to employ Americans to open their wallets and participate in the largest consumer binge in history.

Evident social change at the end of the era liberated women and minorities to a never-before conscious public. From forgotten cars such as the Studebaker Avanti, and cigarettes (“Marlboro… a Man’s world of flavor”) to food, clothing, endless consumer products, furniture, travel, and much more.

Over the next few weeks, the JTCG Blog will be featuring standouts from a colorful collection of vintage print ads that explores the wide, insightful and influential world of American Advertising. From the time of it’s inception til now, the collection includes ads from the last 100 years on a website called Vintage AdBrowser, and serves as inspiration for Advertising agencies, graphic designers, web design and marketing professionals today.

If you enjoy scrolling through these ads as much as I do, feel free to suggest ads that you would like to see featured on the blog. If you are as convincing as the ad you suggest, we will chat about it. Enjoy.

The Client/Agency Relationship Explained…

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

by Jonathan Marshall

Even in today’s fast-paced and always-changing world of advertising, marketing and web design, there is still an old-fashioned and sometimes equally frustrating concept that will never vanish – people communicating with people.

The client/agency relationship is a constant back-and-forth struggle that requires equal effort from both sides. There are many issues that surface in the client/agency relationship. Many advertising agencies don’t trust their clients and vice versa. Agencies (and their creatives) are always angling for ways to do high-visibility, self-serving, award-winning work to get the attention of the ad industry. Clients always try to get the most out of their agency for as little money as possible.

This funny video is clearly an exaggerated version of the day-to-day client/agency relationship and is meant to entertain. Jacob Tyler loves and appreciates all of our clients and in no way would ever have a conversation (with or about them) that even closely resembles this skit or sense of humor. That being said – don’t piss us off, or we won’t want to drink with you anymore.
